Northern Lights follows the K-12 curriculum proscribed by Alberta Education.

Information about the current curriculum is available on the My Child's Learning: A Parent Resource website. This site lists the learning areas in each grade level and includes links to the program of studies, as well as resources for parents and students to assist with learning. More information is also available on the K to 12 curriculum and programs of study section of the Alberta Education website.

Alberta Education is currently developing new curriculum for all grades levels. Implementation of new curriculum for K to 6 students in English Language Arts and Literature, Mathematics, and Physical Education and Wellness will begin in September 2022.

More information about the Draft K-6 curriculum, including how parents and guardians can provide feedback to Alberta Education is available on the Draft K-6 curriculum section of the Alberta Education website.

Full-Day Programming for Kindergarten Students

In Northern Lights the provincially-mandated half-day Kindergarten curriculum is enhanced with a Kindergarten Extension program based on Flight: Alberta’s Early Learning and Care Curriculum Framework to provide students with a full-day Kindergarten experience.

The Kindergarten curriculum is taught by a certified teacher and follows Alberta Education’s Program of Studies. The Extension program is provided by our Extension Educational Assistants (EA’s).
