C2-school is an innovative experiential education program that provides students in grades 3 to 7 with hands-on learning opportunities to explore curricular concepts in a safe and caring learning environment. Students use the amenities and resources available at the Bonnyville and District Centennial Centre (C2) to learn about literacy, numeracy, science, health and wellness, citizenship, and skills that will prepare them for the world of work.
While C2-School is operated by Northern Lights Public Schools, all schools in the Bonnyville-Cold Lake area can access the programming. C2-School is sponsored by Cenovus, the Bonnyville and District Centennial Centre, and the Bonnyville Jr. A Pontiacs. This year, C2-School will be expanding the number of weeks that programming is available (September-April). We are hoping to serve a record number of students!
C2-School gives teachers the opportunity to move their classroom into an exciting and creative learning community site for an entire four-day week (Monday-Thursday or Tuesday-Friday). The time spent at C2-School features a strong emphasis on active observation, writing, drawing, and reflective team-building leadership skills. C2-School gives students a very active week of hands-on multi-sensory learning that helps them connect curriculum to the real world.
During a typical week students will race the track, which includes estimating, timing with a stopwatch, collecting and writing data, and also graphing the results in a bar graph. Students also get the opportunity to use the climbing wall, skate in the Cenovus arena with the Bonnyville Jr A Pontiacs and interview them afterwards, and also take part in a scavenger hunt, which incorporates timing, measuring, answering questions, recording data and team work.
Each grade has different lessons that fit into their respective curricula. Each modified program brings curriculum to life and allows students to explore real world situations. For example, the program can contain components where students have an subject integrative opportunity to put on baking hats and create Peruvian Cocadas, Acadian Metis Fur Trade Bannock or Metis-British Explorer Biscuits and viewing a live industrial kitchen! Students also can have a grade-modified opportunity to use some of their new found multiplication and math arrays to figure out seat-count sales for certain sections of the R.J.Lalonde arena, or learn to healthy menu planning and budgeting while considering spending habits at the C2 Cafe.
There is also the ever-popular Fur Trading Game where students get a chance to discuss animals and probability from the hunting grounds, live the life of a voyageur and trade their furs to the negotiating Hudson Bay Company and the North West Company teams. During this process they learn the importance of global leadership and teamwork, and also learn how to look for a bargain and barter. Another authentic experience is when the students get to explore the C2 and have the grade modified opportunity to the amazing Detective Scavenger Hunt Race, or the Architecture Archeology Game - all of which is experiential integrative learning at its highest!
There are many other activities that students participate in during their four day adventure at C2-School. If you haven’t done so already, come and see experiential learning at it's peak!
Registration is now open for the 2017-2018 school year!

C2-School is currently preparing the schedule for the 2017-2018 school year. This will be our 11th year of operation and we are expanding the number of weeks of programming we offer (September through April)!
Based on demand and attendance in previous years, we expect high demand from new and veteran program participants in 2017-2018. We hope to accommodate as many grade 3 to 7 classes as possible, so please register as soon as possible if you are interested in attending this year. We will book the program on a first-come, first-served basis.
This year there will be a fee of $120 for each class and specific program requirements for students.
For those who are new to C2-School, please note that C2-School is a four-day program and we ask that the homeroom teacher attend with their class each day. This is important so that reflective connections can be made between C2-School experiences and classroom learning and vice versa! C2-School is used as a way to link curriculum to real world situations and provide students with valuable team-building and leadership skills.
Please Note: Any volunteers who will be attending C2-School need to submit a Police Background Check (the longer form for working with children). The teacher will be responsible for collecting this form and bringing it with them to the first day of class. Teachers are also responsible for providing the following forms to the parents/guardians of each participating student, collecting them and bringing them to C2-School on the first day of class:
C2 Youth Waiver
C2 Wall Climbing Form
Northern Lights Public Schools FOIPP Consent
Cenovus Photo/Video Authorization and Release
Meal Ordering Form
Lunch Order Summary Form
